Impact Sound Test - Automotive

Impact sound testing (IST) consists of an acoustic test used to measure the amount of sound that is transmitted through a material when it is impacted. This is important for many applications in the automotive industry in order to improve the overall comfort and driving experience. Some specific applications of IST in the automotive industry are:
 

  • Flooring: IST permits to measure the impact sound transmission loss (SITL) of flooring materials. This is important for reducing the amount of noise that is transmitted between floors in a vehicle.

  • Doors: IST is used to measure the SITL of doors. This is important for reducing the amount of noise that enters the vehicle from the surroundings.

  • Engines and transmissions: by the use of IST is possible to measure the SITL of engine and transmission components.

Impact sound testing (IST) is also used in the aerospace industry to measure and reduce noise levels in aircraft and spacecraft. Different components tested in the aerospace industry are listed below:
 

  • Aircraft panels: IST permits to measure the impact sound transmission loss (SITL) of fuselage panels, wing panels, and engine cowlings. This allows for the evaluation of the noise generated by several components, and ensures that the panel's insulation is sufficient to achieve low noise levels inside the airplane.

  • Aircraft and spacecraft interiors: IST is also applied to test aircraft interiors, such as floors, walls, and seats, in order to provide comfort to passengers.

  • Aircraft and spacecraft engines: By using IST, it is possible to measure the SITL of aircraft engines and propose new designs that help to decrease noise level emissions.
